Atrazine in town water

The New York Times recently published an in-depth investigation on how the popular herbicide Atrazine has contaminated many town water supplies in the United States. While the Environmental Protection Agency says that the levels of Atrazine are safe, the Times article reports that:
“New research suggests that atrazine may be dangerous at lower concentrations than previously thought. Recent studies suggest that, even at concentrations meeting current federal standards, the chemical may be associated with birth defects, low birth weights and menstrual problems. Laboratory experiments suggest that when animals are exposed to brief doses of atrazine before birth, they may become more vulnerable to cancer later.”
Atrazine is used widely in Australia and has been found in many of our town water supplies. While the levels are below the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines “safety” levels, the Times’ article suggests that these levels may not be so “safe” after all, especially for pregnant women.
It’s another example of how common pesticides and herbicides have slowly seeped into and contaminated groundwater supplies over the past decades. Drinking an ultra-purified water like Noble’s Pureau is one way we can avoid ingesting these powerful – and potentially dangerous – chemicals. We recommend that people read the entire Times article - it is located here.
